Luther begins this treatise with the paradoxical statement: “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” This statement covers a man’s both inward feeling and also a man’s outward duties. In the first half of his statement he is addressing to a man’s inward nature that every true Christian has.
